Semi-deciduous forest remnants in Benin: patterns and floristic characterisation
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2009, 156 (2), pp. 159-171. Anglais

Abstract

Patterns of semi-deciduous forest are investigated in Benin by means of phytosociological relevés and multivariate analyses. Species and family importance values are assessed for each forest type. The classifications and DCA ordination of 176 semi-deciduous forest relevés result in six forest types, patterned along climatic and edaphic gradients. The described forest types and their floristic composition (both at species and family levels) are comparable to those recognised in other parts of West Africa where the semi-deciduous forest is more continuous. The leading dominant families were Malvaceae, Fabaceae, Cannabaceae, Putranjivaceae, Ebenaceae and Moraceae. The Drypetes aframensis–Nesogordonia papaverifera forest type appears to be that in which the Cannabaceae, Malvaceae, Putranjivaceae and Violaceae are best represented. The record of many Upper guinean endemic species in Benin’s forest islands provids strong evidence for past floristic connections of the Dahomey gap with the West African rain forest zone.

The effect of Stipa tenacissima tussocks on some soil surface properties under arid bioclimate in the southern Tunisia
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2009, 156 (2), pp. 173-181. Anglais

Abstract

In arid and semi-arid areas of the Mediterranean basin, open steppes are dominated by alfa grass (Stipa tenacissima L.) tussocks which play a crucial role in maintaining ecological ecosystem integrity. In this study, we analyze the effects of S. tenacissima tussocks on soil properties in an arid S. tenacissima steppe in Southern Tunisia. Our main objective is to test whether S. tenacissima microsite is able to ameliorate soil surface properties in semiarid degraded steppes. Soils under S. tenacissima tussocks have higher organic matter, nitrogen content, phosphorus and CO2 efflux than those from open areas. S. tenacissima tussocks improve also physical soil features by increasing soil water content and infiltration capacities underneath the canopy. This study reinforces the idea that fertile patches and particularly S. tenacissima tussocks, by their positive effect on the soil, can be of particular importance for successful restoration in degraded arid and semiarid steppes.

Traditional leafy vegetables in Benin: folk nomenclature, species under threat and domestication
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2009, 156 (2), pp. 183-199. Anglais

Abstract

Using participatory research appraisal, 29 ethnic areas were surveyed to document the folk nomenclature, identify the species under threat and understand the domestication process for the traditional leafy vegetables (TLV) consumed in Benin. It exists a rich folk nomenclature mainly characterised by synonymy and homonymy, 24 species under threat and 17 species under
domestication. Factors threatening these TLV listed by farmers include forest destruction, bush fires, destructive harvesting methods and lack of knowledge about the plants. We emphasize the necessity of combining folk and formal nomenclature in all biodiversity research programmes on TLV and recommend the development of integrated conservation through utilisation strategies for the sustainable preservation and promotion of TLV in Benin.

Abstract

A study aiming the establishment area-species relationship considering the age of the fallow has been led in the perimeter of the natural forest reserve of kigwena (Burundi). According to the systematic inventory of all vegetal species present in three classes of fallows (0-2 years, 3-5 years and more than 5 years), equations of tendency curves obtained are respectively: y = 4,58 Lnx +19,7, y = 6,70 Lnx +4,99 and y = 7,22 Lnx +11,63. The regression is therefore very maid with raised coefficients in any case (R2 = 0,97). Values of c and z obtained show that, on an even surface of 1 m2, the highest specific diversity is in recent fallows (c = 18). According to Arrhenius equation, species-area relationship in fallows of our study (0-2 years, 3-5 years and more than 5 years) are respectively: S = 18A0,16, S = 8A0,31 et S = 11,8A0,26.

Polyphenol levels in two cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) callus cultures
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2009, 156 (2), pp. 223-231. Anglais

Abstract

We study the production of polyphenols by callus cultures from two cultivars of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Coker 312 produces the best calli and has embryogenic potential contrary to that of R405-2000, which is nonembryogenic. There is a relationship between the level of phenolic compounds and the callus cultures. Callogenesis in Coker 312 is highly correlated to a higher content of catechin, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, rutin, o-coumaric acid and salicylic acid. On the other hand, the cinnamic acid derivates (trans-cinnamic, cis and trans-methoxycinnamic acids) found in high amounts in R405-2000 calli could have a negative influence on the induction of cotton callogenesis.

Abstract

Before this study, the ligneous flora of the Cataracts plate was known only very partially. It was limited to the savannah species of the shrubby layer and an unpublished floristic statement (1950) of about thirty forest species. As for the principal wood (14 species) interested by the forest industry, data are available since the year 2005, within the framework of the inventory of the forest unit of installation Loamba which integrates the forests of our zone of investigation. With the present stage of knowledge, it is inventoried 153 woody species being distributed in 42 families whose floristic diversity varies from 0.65 to 13.07%. As in the African tropical forests, the families best represented are Fabaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Malvaceae and Rubiaceae. In spite owing to the fact that the Cataracts plate evolve in the guineo-Congolese – zambezienne transition zone, the phytogeographical analysis shows that the element base is dominated by the guinéo-Congolese species (59.86%). The floristic composition and the phytogeographical behaviour of this flora seem to mark its affinities with the Mayombian and Chaillu flora.

Populations status, syntaxonomy and synecology of Scopolia carniolica Jacq. in the Western Alps (Piedmont, Italy)
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2009, 156 (2), pp. 245-258. Anglais

Abstract

Scopolia carniolica is an orophilous forb widspread from the Eastern Italian border to the Caucasian regions, with some few disjointed populations in the Western Alps (Piedmont, NW Italy) at about 420 km from the nearest Eastern populations. The species is reported in Piedmont as a critically endangered species (CR). On the basis of the discovery of new populations, the synecological and syntaxonomical characteristics in the Western Alps have been studied. The Scopolia carniolica distribution area in the Western Alps is now estimated to be of almost 800 ha and total extant population size to be around 8.000-9.000 ramets. The species occurs mainly on highly shaded habitats, located on scree and boulder fields. In the Western Alps the vegetation could be ranked in a Corylus avellana community, referred to the central European Tilio platyphylli-Acerion pseudoplatani. Forest management planning should be encouraged with a conservational purpose, avoiding the alteration of the Corylus avellana canopy cover in the actual and potential area.

Ecological magnitude and fine scale dynamics of the mediterranean narrow endemic therophyte, Arenaria provincialis (Caryophyllaceae)
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2009, 156 (2), pp. 259-272. Anglais

Abstract

In the context of plant species rarity in mediterranean ecosystems, this study aims to precise the autoecology of the local annual endemic plant, Arenaria provincialis (Caryophyllaceae), by quantifying habitat and vegetation characteristics, and demographic parameters. Its populations are surprisingly scattered along a wide altitudinal and topological range, but over small geographical distances. This implies an important habitat differentiation from the thermophilous dry coast to the colder supra-mediterranean summits in open limestone rocky habitats such as steep screes, ledges, cracks or crests. Among the 163 plant species identified in presence of A. provincialis within 100 m2 area, 92% belong to the stress grime pole, highlighting the stressful conditions within the different habitats caused by drought, strong wind, and high thermic contrasts. Demographical surveys reveal strong spatial and temporal fluctuations.

Root growth and morphology of four provenances of a perennial grass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) in rhizotron chamber
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2009, 156 (2), pp. 273-282. Anglais

Abstract

We evaluated root growth of 4 provenances of the perennial grass Cenchrus ciliaris L. Seedlings were grown in rhizotrons filled with sandy soils for 5 weeks. These provenances were characterized by a fasciculate root system that is through to trap water in the surface soil. The high root concentration in the first 30 cm depth showed their ability to take advantage of low rainfall, often frequent under arid bio climate. We found significant differences in root length; relative growth rate and maximum rooting depth between the 4 provenances. The maximum rooting depth was significantly greater for provenances P1 and P4. The root number decreased with depth. Maximum root number was observed in 0-15 cm layer, with significant differences between provenances. These results proved variability in root growth and agree with those found in southern of Tunisia about the variability in the performance of Cenchrus ciliaris provenances.

Abstract

In the National Park of Tlemcen, tests of reforestation in Aleppo pine, pinion pine, Atlas cedar and cork oak had been realised in 2005 and it is possible three years later to try to clear the reasons of the successes and the failures of these works. The vegetation has been observed on transect of 50 meters where the stratification of the vegetation was marked in order to see in which atmosphere of vegetation the regeneration has survived or not in each of compartment. In each of the plots were pointed, topography, the rate of the recovering of the vegetation, the dominant kinds and the altitude. As the number of the pointed out is weak, it is indispensable to use statistical tests, the observations have been done by non-inferential statistical methods. It appears quickly that the complete failure of the regeneration of Atlas cedar to the success of the regeneration of Aleppo pine, pinion pine and cork oak in these heterogeneous plots depends of the vegetations and the present local ecology condition in each plots.

Abstract

In Lebanon, Prunus amygdalus Stokes, P. armeniaca L. and P. persica L. (Rosaceae) are cultivated for their nutritional and cosmetic properties. Fine pollinic morphology was studied, for three samples taken out of the three species, in order to try to highlight distinctive pollinic characters which would make it possible to select populations each one of these presenting characters in order to reinforce genetic variability. Numerical treatment of principal pollinic characters was carried out in order to determine the morphology of the grains of pollen, stereostructure of the tectum and the variations of dimensions of the polar axis (P), of the equatorial diameter (E): average, minimum, maximum values. The characters of the three species enable us to show the existence from three botanical species in the genus Prunus.
