Approach to climatophilous vegetation series of Serra da Estrela (Portugal)
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2012, 159 (3), pp. 283-287. Anglais

Lycopodio clavati–Junipereto nani S.; 2. Saxifrago spathularis–Betuleto celtibericae S.; 3. Holco mollis–Querco pyrenaicae S.; 4. Arbuto–Querco pyrenaicae cytisetoso grandiflori S.; e 5. Viburno tini–Querco roboris S.

Abstract

This work contains the study results of climatophilous vegetation series from Serra da Estrela, the highest
mountain on the Portuguese mainland. Located in central-northern Portugal in the Estrelensean Sector (Carpetan-Leonese Subprovince), the Serra da Estrela has several bioclimatic stages, mainly resulting from slope and altitude ranges: mesomediterranean, submediterranean mesotemperate, supramediterranean, submediterranean supratemperate, and submediterranean orotemperate. In each of these belts are observed changes in plant communities that determine variations in terms of the vegetation series. The methodology was based on Dynamic-Catenal Phytosociology. The results show the presence of five climatophilous series; their structural characteristics and dynamics are described in this paper: 1. Lycopodio clavati–Junipereto nani S.; 2. Saxifrago spathularis–Betuleto celtibericae S.; 3. Holco mollis–Querco pyrenaicae S.; 4. Arbuto–Querco pyrenaicae cytisetoso grandiflori S.; e 5. Viburno tini–Querco roboris S.

Abstract

This work was developed as part of PhD research devoted to the flora and vegetation of the Caldeirão and
Monchique mountains that aims to identify the vegetation climatophilous series and use them as an environmental
diagnosis of Algarve administrative province phyto-ecological subregions. Biogeographic and bioclimatic considerations are presented, as well as the study area pedological and lithological characterization. For each of the seven climatophilous series the dynamic and catenal behaviours, as well as the main characteristic plants that constitute the successional stages, are given. The corresponding patrimonial value is studied.

Bio-ecological, phytosociological and conservation aspects of relictual and disjointed populations of Simethis mattiazzi (Vandelli) Sacc. (Xanthorrhoeaceae) in the Channel of Sicily
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2012, 159 (3), pp. 303-318. Anglais

Abstract

Two populations of Simethis mattiazzi (Xanthorrhoeaceae) were recently discovered in the Channel of Sicily – (1) Punta Bassana (Marettimo Island) and (2) Mount S. Giuliano (western Sicily) – at a considerable distance from the nearest stations hitherto known, located in southern Sardinia, the Pontine Islands Archipelago and Tunisia. The taxonomical and distributive aspects of this species are analysed to highlight the relictual and biogeographical
significance of the disjointed and fragmentary nuclei distributed in several small islands of the Channel of Sicily, the
Italian Peninsula and North Africa. Some morphological, biological, ecological and phytosociological aspects of the two new populations are analysed to assess risk factors. These relictual populations are included in a residual garrigue ascribed to the association Erico–Micromerietum fruticulosae, endemic to western Sicily and characterized by a significant frequency of endemic or rare species. The coenose is tied to the calcareous dolomite rocky ridges located near the coast and exposed to humid currents from the sea; this ecological combination gives to the habitat a character of oceanic environmental conditions, somewhat similar to the Atlantic stations where the main range of the species gravitates. The survey has shown the populations to be formed of a small number of individuals at both stations, which has further highlighted the biological precariousness of these populations, located at the extreme south-eastern limit of the range of the species. The threats of anthropogenic nature, such as reforestation with non-native conifers, but mostly by fires, the frequency of which tends to alter the integrity of the sites, increase this vulnerability. The IUCN “risk status” for the regional territory of Sicily of S. mattiazzi is to be ascribed to the “Critically endangered” category, in accordance with the B1ab (ii) and B2ab (ii) criteria of the IUCN. The same “risk status” is likely to be extended to the other isolated stations of the western Mediterranean.

The Laperrine’s olive tree (Oleaceae): a wild genetic resource of the cultivated olive and a model-species for studying the biogeography of the Saharan Mountains
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2012, 159 (3), pp. 319-328. Anglais

Abstract

The Laperrine’s olive is an iconic subspecies of Olea europaea (Oleaceae) with a narrow distribution in the
Saharan Mountains, from south Algeria to northeast Sudan. Recently, population genetic and phylogeographic studies gave insights on its reproductive strategies, its history since the Pleistocene, and its putative utility as a genetic resource of the cultivated olive. In natural habitats, multi-centennial individuals occur in very harsh environmental conditions and mainly reproduce vegetatively, but it appears that sexuality may be easily restored under favourable conditions. Crosses between the Laperrine’s olive and other olive diploid subspecies (subspp. cuspidata and europaea) have been recently reported. Plastid DNA analyses also indicate that the Laperrine’s olive has already been used during the secondary diversification of the cultivated Mediterranean olive in the Maghreb. This taxon could therefore be used as source of genes for the breeding of new olive cultivars, particularly to improve drought tolerance. In this review, we also address the potential utility of this taxon for studying the self-incompatibility genetic determinism and the polyploidy origin in O. europaea. Phylogeographic studies attested that Laperrine’s olive populations show affinities with both the Mediterranean and sub-Saharan olive taxa, but the high genetic differentiation between populations indicates that gene exchanges between massifs were limited or
inexistent for a long time. Dating these events remains a challenge for determining in which environmental conditions these populations have been separated. Further comparisons of phylogeographic patterns and reproductive strategies between various plant groups are required to improve knowledge on the biogeography of Saharan mountains and may help to define appropriate conservation strategies of their threatened ecosystems.

Mercury quantification in samples of the E.H. Tourlet’s herbarium and impregnation measurements of people involved in its restoration process

Abstract

Until the 1980s, most of herbarium specimens were protected from bacterial, fungal and insect degradation
using a treatment called “corrosive sublimate”, a solution of chloride of mercury. We present here a study carried out on the 19th century “general herbarium” of the botanist pharmacist Ernest Henry Tourlet. This herbarium contains about 17 000 parts of Angiosperms, Gymnosperms and Pteridophytes from France, Europe and the European colonies collected in the 19th century or taken from older herbaria. The herbarium had been protected by mercuric chloride. This herbarium is currently being restored in the Faculty of Pharmacy of Tours. During this operation, we quantified mercury concentrations in plant specimens and herbarium sheets. The analyses have been performed first qualitatively by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, then by ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry). We also quantified the concentration of mercury in the urines of the two employees restoring the herbarium (one of them for 6 years, the other for 2 years). The results indicated an important variability of mercury concentrations across the samples; one specimen (n° 2) presented an abnormal concentration of more than 70 mg/gr. of dry matter The results shows that, occasionally, high concentrations can be found in some of the specimens handled. The results of the analysis of the urine of the persons in charge of the restoration of the herbarium show low values of mercurecreatinine ratio: 1,9 μgr. per gr. of creatinine for the employee with the longest exposure, less than 1 μg for the other.

Abstract

Traditional leafy vegetables (LFT) are plants whose leaves are used and consumed by local human populations.
Africa is an enormous reservoir of diversity for those vegetables which participate to food security, nutrition and monetary income in both rural and urban areas. The leafy vegetables are rich in fibres, vitamins and minerals. But intensive and repeated harvesting of the LFT in Africa results in their increasing rarity. Among endogenous leafy vegetables recorded in Benin, Sesamum radiatum Schumach. & Thonn. (Pedaliaceae) is a species commonly consumed by many ethnic groups. During plant development, quantitative and qualitative modifications occur, such as an increase in stem size and the production of leaves, flowers, fruit and grains To contribute to a better understanding of the breeding system and phenology for in situ and ex situ conservation of S. radiatum, we conducted both on-station and on-farm experiments. The on-station experiment was conducted at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Abomey-Calavi in South Benin (6 250N; 2 190 E) to study the phenology, the floral biology, the reproductive system and the insects visiting the flowers of the species .The on-farm experiment was carried out in Savè, in central Benin (8 020N; 2 160 E) to study exclusively the floral biology and the insects visiting the flowers of the plant in its natural biotope. We studied plant phenology, anthesis, floral morphology and structure, pollen viability, the reproductive system and the insects visiting flowers. Data was analysed by using simple descriptive statistics (percentages, means, etc.) to characterise the species specific traits that are available in summary tables. In order to determine the reproductive system of the species, four pollination tests, (lot 1 = natural pollination (control); lot 2 = natural autopollination with flowers of the same plant; lot 3 = manual autopollination on castrated flowers with pollen from the same plant; lot 4 = natural allopollination on castrated flowers within pollen from other plants), were carried out. The pollination rate data was linearised and analysed with an ANOVA. Student-Newman-Keuls tests were used to test for significant differences between pollination treatments. Results indicated that S. radiatum is a facultatively allogamous hermaphrodite plant with a pollen/ovule ratio equal to 66.1. Regarding the phenology of this species, plant development occurs in 75 days with four development phases. The first phase lasts for seven days with plant height of 22.2 ± 4.6 mm, the second phase takes 32 days (39 days after plant rising) and the plant height is 226.0 ± 8.9 mm, the following phase extends on six days with a plant height of 675.0 ± 33.8 mm. The fourth phase stretches out to 28 days and the plant height reaches 810.0 ± 21.0 mm. Blooming period ranges from 4h00 to 6h00 with flowering peak at 6h00. Flowering was initiated 56 days after seedling emergence and most of the flowers (98%) appeared 71 days after seedling emergence. Insects encountered on open flowers were mostly hymenopterans, Lasioglossum duponti (Vachal), Apis mellifera L., Amegilla sp., Amegilla acraensis Fabricius and Xylocopa sp followed by dipterans, Paragus borbonicus Macquart, Eurycarenus sp. Some insects like Apis mellifera visited the flowers early in the morning (6h00 and 9h00) whereas others such as Xylocopa sp visited the flowers all day long. High synchrony in flowering times among plants suggests that the rate of allogamy in S. radiatum may be high.

Which one comes first, the tamarind or the Macrotermes termitarium?
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2012, 159 (3), pp. 345-355. Anglais

Abstract

The relationship between termitaria and their vegetation is being increasingly studied. Nonetheless, our understanding of the order of establishment of termitaria and their associated vegetations which may be relevant for developing conservation plans is limited. This study focuses on order of establishment of Macrotermes termitaria and associated plant species with a special focus on Tamarindus indica and was to answer whether tamarind trees establish before termitaria or reversely? A comparative analysis of T. indica-dominated vegetations on termitaria and adjacent vegetations was undertaken using a matrix involving 80 relevés across four phytogeographical districts (phytodistricts), and an Indicator Species Analysis. We discussed how informative vegetation data could be on termitaria and tamarind trees establishment order. Whatever the phytodistrict, vegetations associated with termitaria were found to be much similar to those of their adjacent areas. Overall, only seven species (not including T. indica) out of a total of 63 recorded were found to be confined to termitaria. These results would suggest termitaria to not be a factor controlling establishment of T. indica and most of the species their host. Comparative vegetation analysis was thus found not to be enough to stand on termitaria and T. indica establishment order. However, termitaria-tamarind associations may be profitable to both tamarind trees and termites: termitaria may help mitigate drought on tamarind trees under increasing drought conditions while tamarind trees may offer food to termites. Integration of information on termite species’ feeding preferences and ecology was proposed in order to improve current state of knowledge on tamarind-termite relationship.

Micropropagation of carob, Ceratonia siliqua L., by apex culture
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2012, 159 (3), pp. 357-361. Anglais

Abstract

The great variability of Ceratonia siliqua, its sexual polymorphism and its long stage of juvenility imply the use of conventional and in vitro culture techniques. The high phenotypic variation between carob cultivars has important implications for selection, cultivation practices and establishment of new plantations to improve productivity of this crop. The present work was undertaken to develop a simple protocol for micropropagation of carob through meristem culture on half-strength Murashige and Skoog medium. The best results were obtained by introducing the meristem culture when buds were starting to swell. Meristem sprouting was stimulated on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. The highest number of well-developed shoots from meristems was obtained with 2mg l–1 6-benzylaminopurine and 2mg l–1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. Higher rooting ability and root quality were obtained with 4mg l–1 naphthalene acetic acid.

Growth stimulation and compensatory growth on Elytrigia juncea experiencing different defoliation regimes

Abstract

Compensatory growth for defoliated plants is an issue still debated in literature, due to methodological weakness and lack of knowledge about its occurrence. In a green-house experiment, we applied three types of defoliation on Elytrigia juncea, a Poaceae species dominating costal foredunes. Responses to the different combinations of intensity and frequency of defoliation were assessed by measurements of final biomass of target species. Relative growth rates in height and number of leaves were also calculated, enable us to assess more accurately compensatory growth. An important growth stimulation was pointed out two weeks after a severe cut, and was still visible over the course of the experimentation without being able to induce overcompensation of growth. The occurrence of compensatory growth was pointed out only when plant tissues removed by cutting were added.

Genetic parameters and clonal variation in growth and nutritional traits of containerized white spruce somatic seedlings
Paru dans Acta Botanica Gallica, 2012, 159 (3), pp. 373-384. Anglais

Abstract

Clonal forestry can significantly increase forest productivity and its establishment requires a high level of clonal variation to maximize genetic gain and diversity. An evaluation of the genetic parameters of clones at a juvenile stage is necessary to better understand the amplitude of clonal variability and the degree of genetic control. The analysis of variance of white spruce clones showed a highly significant clonal effect for the majority of the growth characters at the end of both growing seasons and for the mineral status at the 2+0 stage. Our results reveal that height exhibits a high clonal heritability value which remained stable over the two growing seasons (H2c= 0.60). Strong genotypic and phenotypic correlations were observed between height and diameter at the end of the first growing season and between height and the rest of the growth characters at the end of the second growing season. The strong clonal variation, genetic control and genetic correlation particularly of height found in this study indicate that the selection ability of the best performing clones is possible for intensive forest management.
